On Friday I was able to take part in a workshop about assisting grieving youth. This whole process has been new for me. Experiencing the loss of several young people (and their parents) in our community has been quite a rollercoaster of emotion for all of us.
I will admit with the photography campaign for this project I have interacted with those from all types of backgrounds, but I never sat down and talked with a young person that experienced the journey of grief. Most of the information that I heard in the workshop was reminder that I was going in the right direction. It also affirmed that I can be of assistance to an age group that is often times ignored.
One of the most valuable pieces of advice can be summed up in two words: Be There.
No matter the age it’s imperative that you just BE THERE for a person that’s grieving.
We don’t want to hear, “they’re in a better a place.” Now, I’m speaking for myself. I don’t want to hear that. I understand everything that you’re saying, but I’m not receiving it because I’m hurting.
Sometimes all we need is a listening ear. A person that will assist us with getting to the other side.
XOXO,
RJ
